Today: We Are Not Made For Ourselves

Every time we make ourselves the center of our universe, we find ourselves in the wrong place and we find ourselves out of tune. Why?

We weren’t made for

. We were made for more.

The overarching story of God is him longing to dwell with his people.

Genesis 1:27
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

He created the

as a place to dwell with them.

Genesis 3:4-5
But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

Their strings were out of tune. They were not reaching for an apple, but for self.

Exodus 25:8-9
And let them make me a sanctuary, that I may dwell in their midst. Exactly as I show you concerning the pattern of the tabernacle, and of all its furniture, so you shall make it.

God instructed his people to create a

as a place to dwell with them.

Exodus 40:34
Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.

The Tabernacle lasts for 400 years before they build the

.

2 Samuel 7:1-2
Now when the king lived in his house and the Lord had given him rest from all his surrounding enemies, the king said to Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells in a tent.”

1 Kings 8:10-11
And when the priests came out of the Holy Place, a cloud filled the house of the Lord, so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, for the glory of the Lord filled the house of the Lord.

John 2:19-21
“Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” The Jews then said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?” But he was speaking about the temple of his body.

Jesus is actually saying that

is the Temple.

Finally, years later, one of His followers, Paul, was talking to the Corinthian Church about who they were:

1 Corinthians 3:16
Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?

1 Corinthians 6:19
Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own…

We are not made for

.

God has found his dwelling place. In us.

Romans 12:1-2
And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

are the temple.
