Lesson 4 — Study Guide

— THE EXODUS - ISRAEL IN EGYPT

CHART 1/LESSON 4

Nearly

years had passed since the Israelites came to in the days of Joseph.

Exodus 1:7-8 says, “And the children of Israel were

and increased abundantly, and , and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them. Now there arose a new over Egypt, which knew not Joseph.”

The new king set harsh

over the Israelites and made them to work in the fields and on the construction of cities and walls.

As an example for us today, we can see the deliverance of Israel from bondage as a

of God’s plan of redemption for fallen humanity.

MOSES
Because the Pharaoh became

that the Hebrews would someday rise up and overthrow the Egyptians, he commanded the to kill every newborn at the time of birth.

“But the midwives feared

, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but the men children .” Exodus 1:17

Then Pharaoh commanded all his people to destroy the baby boys by throwing them in a

. Exodus 1:22

After Moses was born, he was

for by his parents, and .

When his parents could no longer hide him in their home, his mother made an

of , and waterproofed it with and .

Then they hid Moses in this ark among the

in the .

While at the river, Pharaoh’s

found the baby Moses, and with the help of Moses’s sister , Jochebed was hired to care for her own baby.

When Moses was grown, he killed an

who was beating a Hebrew and hid him in the .

After realizing that others knew about his deed, and fearing revenge by the

, he fled to the land of .

There he married

, the daughter of a Midianite priest named .

While tending sheep, Moses saw a

and noticed that it was not with .

From the, burning bush, the Lord called unto Moses to deliver the Hebrews from

When Moses went before Pharaoh and gave him the message from the Lord which was

!

Because the Pharaoh wanted to keep the Hebrews in bondage, God sent upon Egypt

.

The ten plagues were:

1.

6.
2. 7.
3. 8.
4. 9.
5. 10.

The Hebrews escaped the final plague by obeying the message spoken by Moses. Each household was to take and kill a

lamb and strike its on the two side post and the upper post of the door. Then they were to the lamb and it that night, along with bread and herbs.

They were to eat in

with on their feet, loins girded and staff in their hand.

At midnight the Lord passed through the land of Egypt and killed the

of every household that did not have the applied to the doorpost. To those who obeyed the command of the Lord, they were spared this plague.

According to I Corinthians 5:7,

is our Passover sacrifice.

Pharaoh at last agreed to let the Hebrews go. They were led out in the desert by a

by night and a by day. Exodus 13:21

When Pharaoh changed his mind and sent his army after the Israelites, the Lord gave them a way of escape by crossing over the

on dry ground.

I Corinthians 10:13 lets us know that the

will make a way of escape.

The same waters which divided to let the Israelites cross over fell upon the Egyptians and destroyed them all (Exodus 14:30).

In typology, Egypt represents

or .

The Red Sea is a type of

(I Corinthians 10:1-12).

And a future lesson will show how that entering the promise land is a type of receiving

promises.

— FROM DELIVERANCE TO THE LAW

CHART 2/LESSON 4

Moses brought Israel from the Red Sea to the wilderness of

and after months they arrived at . They stayed here for .

Mt. Sinai would mark the beginning of Israel’s

.

At Mt. Sinai, Moses was given the

which included:
- the (Moral Law)
- the and laws.

The commandments were the way that Israel was to live until the time of Christ. Paul said in Galatians 3:24 that the Law was our

to bring us to Christ.

Also, Moses was given the plan of the

which was to be the physical dwelling place of God’s spirit in the midst of the people of Israel.

THE TABERNACLE
The tabernacle was more than a place for ceremonial worship while in the wilderness, it also was a shadow of the redemptive work of

as well as a pattern of plan for the present church age.

The court of the Tabernacle was approximately

feet long, and feet wide.

It had

gate on the side.

As a type, we find that John 10:9 tells us that there is only

way to find salvation.

Inside the courtyard was the

, the , and the itself.

Inside the tabernacle were two rooms called the

and the .

These two rooms were separated by a

of blue, purple and scarlet.

In the Holy of Holies abode the

of between the CHERUBIM
They were located on the lid of a box called the Ark of the Covenant. The lid of the Ark was called the .

CHART 3/LESSON 4

ALTAR OF SACRIFICE

The priest approached the Tabernacle first by the way of the brazen altar where he offered the

for sin. Before a person could continue worship, they had to pass this altar of sacrifice.

This altar was a place of

and of . The approach to God is made by way of . In Luke 13:3, Jesus said, “ ye ye shall all likewise perish.”

Today there is no pardon, no righteousness, no peace, no grace, no blessings and no

except the sacrifice of the cross.

Leviticus 6:13, lets us know that the

upon the altar was to, “ !” The atonement of Calvary is always open for the person who seeks the place for justification of sins.

THE LAVER OF WATER

Just before the door of the tabernacle stood the

where the priest was required to wash (Exodus 30:21).

The New Testament application of the brazen laver of water is

.

Mark 16:16 tells us that a person must

and be .

I Peter 3:21 shows the importance of baptism by saying that it “doth also

.”

I Corinthians 6:11 shows us that we are

, , and in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Notice the laver of water was place between the

(repentance) and the (the kingdom).

Acts 2:38 shows this pattern of

, and the receiving the Holy Ghost (or enter into the kingdom of tabernacle).

THE HOLY PLACE

In this place of worship we find the

, the of and the .
The golden candlestick was made of with branches coming forth from the stand. This was the only in the tabernacle.

Just as the candlesticks were made of

and the light, so was Christ first beaten that we could receive his .

The table of shewbread was the place to feed the High Priest and his sons in the Holy place. Likewise, Jesus is the

of life.

The altar of incense represents the

to God (Revelation 5:8). The incense was offered to God each and . Likewise, each day of our lives it is good to and with prayer.

THE HOLY OF HOLIES

Behind the veil was the

.

Within this place was the

.

The ark contained

that budded, the and a golden pot of .

The rod was a type of

in Christ
(Numbers 17:8).

The golden pot was a reminder of the

of God in the wilderness.

The commandments were to

God’s direction.

Resting on top of the Ark was the

made of pure gold. Titus 3:5 lets us know that we are ultimately saved by the Lord’s .

The location of the tabernacle was to be in the

of all the tribes of Israel. When they were traveling they were to follow the just as we are to follow the Spirit of the Lord.

Notice the pattern that Jesus fulfilled and for us to follow:

Hebrew 9:28, Jesus

Matthew 3:16, Jesus

Luke 22:41-44, Jesus

John 12:35, Jesus

John 6:33-35, Jesus

Hebrews 10:19-20, Jesus
