Mark 8:34-38 - Background Cost of Discipleship

Jesus was always answering questions with a question. In this text, Jesus asked two questions in response to Peter’s rebuke concerning His teaching about His death and resurrection.

In verse 33, Jesus tells Peter his response is like satan, because Peter is not setting his mind on the things of God.

For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? For what can a man give in return for his soul? —Mark 8:36-37

There are 3 responses to these questions in this text that I want to challenge you today with regarding discipleship.

  1. In verse 34 “IF” anyone would come after me(Jesus), let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me(Jesus). Also seen in Luke 9:23

  3. In verse 35 “For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my(Jesus) sake and the gospel’s will save it.”

We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10 For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. —Romans 6:9-11 (ESV)

*Third response is in verse 38 “For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”

A disciple who is fully alive and follows after Christ, will NOT be

So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, 33 but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven. —Matthew 10:32

  1. Will you choose to come, deny yourself and take up your cross daily?
  2. Will you give up everything in order to share the Gospel?
  3. Will you NOT stop talking about Jesus Christ because it brings glory to the Father?
