Why We Are Not Often Prepared To Follow Jesus In Our Daily Routines
1) Profesionalization of Christian ministry
Ephesians 4:11–12 (ESV): And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry
2) Compartmentalization of life
- When we pray “Give us this day our daily bread”
And he does give us our daily bread. He does it by means of the farmer who planted and harvested the grain, the baker who made the flour into bread, and the person who prepared our meal. —Martin Luther
Luther also said - God could have decided to create every new human being the same way he did Adam and Eve. Instead he chose to create new lives through the vocation of husbands and wives, fathers and mothers. God calls men and women together and gives them the ability to have children. And through love and care of parents, God extends love and care to children.
- This is the doctrine of vocation.
How God Designed For Us to View Work
1. God Delights in Work
Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
- God creating. God making.
Genesis 2:2 And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done.
- Work begins with God. He delights in work. He is working.
2. God designed work for our good and His glory.
Genesis 2:7-9; 15 then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature. 8 And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed. 9 And out of the ground the Lord God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.
Genesis 1:27-28 God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”“
Matthew 22:37 (Jesus) Love God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.
Ephesians 6:5-7 perform your jobs, “with a sincere heart, just as you would obey Christ…serve with a good will as to the Lord and not to man.”
Colossians 3:22-24 work with a sincere heart and reverence for God. Whatever you do work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord not for man… It is Christ you are serving.”
