Growth Group Questions - Pursuing Purity
1 Thessalonians 4:1-8
Part of 1 Thessalonians—Hope and Holiness
May 28, 2023

We now reach a portion of Paul’s letter to the Thessalonians in which he encourages the believers to pursue purity, honoring God not only in their spirits but also in their bodies.

  1. Looking back over this past month, identify someone whom you witnessed make an intentional choice to please the Lord rather than themselves. Share with the group how their example encourages you.

  2. Read 1 Thessalonians 4:1-2. What does Paul desire for the Thessalonian believers? How does he want them to live? If our salvation is not dependent upon our performance, why is Paul so bold in asking them to follow a particular lifestyle?

  3. Read 1 Thessalonians 4:3-8. Discuss: Why is sex such a big deal?

  4. What does Paul mean when he says that it is God’s will for us to be sanctified? Do you think sanctification is taken seriously by most Christians in our culture today? In what ways is sanctification counter-cultural?

  5. Read Isaiah 5:20-21, 1 Corinthians 6:18-20, and 2 Corinthians 5:17. What practical advice can we gain from the Word of God in facing sexual temptation?

  6. How can we as a church body more wholeheartedly pursue purity? What is the danger of our not truly pursuing purity?
