2 Corinthians 1:21-22 (NIV)
He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.

2 Corinthians 5:5 (NIV)
Now the one who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, who has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.

Ephesians 1:13-14 (NIV)
When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession – to the praise of his glory.

The Spirit As A Deposit …

  • Calls Us To Be Eternally Minded About Our Bodies And Our Circumstances.

2 Corinthians 1:22 and 5:5 (NIV)
The Spirit is a deposit guaranteeing what is to come … .

Ephesians 1:14 (NIV)
… a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession … .

Romans 8:22-23 (NIV)
We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for … the redemption of our bodies.

  • Calls Us To Embrace, Pray, And Look For Evidence Of The Kingdom To Come In The Present Moment.

Matthew 12:28 (NIV)
“But if it is by the Spirit of God that I drive out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.”

Luke 11:2-4 (NIV)
He said to them, “When you pray, say:

“‘Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation.’”

Luke 11:9-10 (NIV)
“So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.”

“Which of you fathers, if you son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

Luke 11:11-13 (NIV)
“… how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

Communion

  • In what way do you need the Spirit’s help to be more eternally minded?

  • Have you seen glimpses of the “kingdom to come” recently?
