LOVE LIKE JESUS
Text: John 13:34-35
34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
1. Jesus’ Command To Love (John 13:34-35)
Is this really a new commandment? Jesus said it was. Then what is new about the commandment to love each other?

- The phrase, “just as I have loved you” is powerful. It teaches us that

- Jesus is our empowerment. “Just as I have loved you” not only shows us a new pattern, but a new power – as I have. We can love this way because of Jesus.

2. Jesus’ Pattern For Loving (cf. John 13:1-16)

- We must lay aside status and rank and prestige and take the form of a servant. We must view others as more significant than ourselves.

- Jesus here gives the example of helping others by engaging in practical deeds.
Application:
- The power for the early church for making inroads into the culture was her radical love expressed in giving and compassion toward those in need. (cf. Acts 2:45)
- When the church launched in the first century, it launched on the platform of love.
- The early church turned the world upside down with her love, generosity and compassion.
- When Christians embraced the teaching of Jesus and lived out the new command, it changed the world. And if we will do the same, it will change our world too.
- Loving like Jesus will change us, our church, our community, our world, and advance the kingdom of Jesus Christ.
