“…and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” Ephesians 6.17b

Why a sword?

What is the Word of God?

The Bible is the Word of God, fully inspired, infallible, and entirely trustworthy.
It was written by human authors, under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit. (2 Timothy 3:16) The Bible has supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct. The books of the Bible should be interpreted according to their context and purpose and in reverent humility to the Lord. - TLC Statement of Beliefs

**What does God’s Word do? God’s Word…

  1. and .

You have been taught the holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work. 2 Timothy 3.15-17 NLT

For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two- edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. Hebrews 4.12 NLT

How sweet your words taste to me;
they are sweeter than honey.
Your commandments give me understanding;
no wonder I hate every false way of life.
Your word is a lamp to guide my feet
and a light for my path. Psalms 119.103-105 NLT

But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Matthew 4.4 NLT

2. Reveals God’s and .

At that time there was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon. He was righteous and devout and was eagerly waiting for the Messiah to come and rescue Israel. The Holy Spirit was upon him and had revealed to him that he would not die until he had seen the Lord’s Messiah…. Anna, a prophet, was also there in the Temple… She came along just as Simeon was talking with Mary and Joseph, and she began praising God. She talked about the child to everyone who had been waiting expectantly for God to rescue Jerusalem. Luke 2.25-38

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
1. What stood out to you as we studied the Sword of the Spirit? What has your relationship with God’s word been like over your life? What role does the Bible have in your daily life right now?

2. Psalm 119 is remarkable for how often it refers to God’s written revelation, His Word. As you ask God to help you put on the armor of God–specifically the Sword of the Spirit, His Word–this week read this Psalm in one sitting. Circle every reference to God’s Word throughout the psalm (i.e., Your precepts, Your testimonies, Your law, Your truth, Your commands, etc.).

Praise God for the times these have been true in your life:
• When I follow God’s Word, God gives me joy. (v1 NLT)
• When I pursue God’s Word, God expands my understanding. (v32 NLT) • When I meditate on God’s Word, God makes me wise. (v98 NLT)
• God’s Word gives me direction and guides me. (v105 NLT)
