Here’s my question for you today:
What if the lighthearted, carefree nature of summer could be provided to you on a more permanent, regular basis?
What if you could still accomplish all the things that you need to do but the anxiety and worry were completely gone?
Matthew 6:24 NASB
“No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.
Servant of two masters
You cannot be devoted to both!
The key is that the kind of life created by devotion to anything other than Jesus is incompatible with the kingdom of God.
Genesis 3:17 NASB
Then to Adam He said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat from it’;Cursed is the ground because of you; With hard labor you shall eat from it All the days of your life.
But Jesus also said this…
Matthew 6:25-27 NASB
25 “For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is life not more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the sky, that they do not sow, nor reap, nor gather crops into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more important than they? 27 And which of you by worrying can add a single day to his life’s span?
How do we stay devoted to God while still engaged in the world?
This is so unnatural to our human experience that Jesus spends tremendous time teaching on this:
Matthew 6:28-34 NASB
28 And why are you worried about clothing? Notice how the lilies of the field grow; they do not labor nor do they spin thread for cloth, 29 yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you? You of little faith!
31 Do not worry then, saying, ‘What are we to eat?’ or ‘What are we to drink?’ or ‘What are we to wear for clothing?’ 32 For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.
33 But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided to you.
Challenge Question:
Is there something in your life that you are overly devoted to and it is causing avoidable anxiety and worry? What would it be like to seek God first? What would it be like to surrender your desires and allow God to make good on his promises to you?
If you prayed the prayer to start fresh with God today text “startagain” (one word) to 97000 so we can connect with you and help you take the next steps in this amazing decision.
