Nahum - Next Steps

Message Summary

One of the hardest truths for us to learn is that there are consequences for our actions. So often our desires are to do what we want to do without regard for how it will affect other aspects of our life. We are often blind to the affects our decisions have on the lives of others. Living with the consequences of another’s decision, whether it is a personal connection or a systemic decision (governmental, societal, etc.) can be challenging and often leave us wondering, “Where’s God in the midst of all of this?” This week, we examined the book of Nahum and saw the hope when we remember God’s character and our opportunity to speak his truth in love into the lives of others.

• What is your reaction when you see systematic oppression, whether that be governmental or societal?

• Have you ever watched someone close to you make poor decisions with lasting consequences? What was your reaction to that situation?

• How do you react when your beliefs and your feelings are not in agreement?

Read Nahum 1:2-7
1) How does the prophet Nahum describe God’s character (things that describe who God is)?

2) How do you understand jealousy, vengeance, and rage when attributed to God?

3) Spend a moment and read these verses Exodus 20:4-5, Deuteronomy 4:23-24; Jeremiah 50:28-29, Isaiah 1:24-26, 63:1-9. How does these passages help us understand these characteristics of God?

4) How does he describe God’s power?

5) When we feel helpless during oppression or dark/difficult circumstances, why is it important for us to remember God’s character and his power?

Read Nahum 3:3-7
6) Not long before Nahum, the Lord had sent Jonah to warn Nineveh and they heeded the Lord’s warnings. This led to the Lord, at that time, sparing Nineveh (Jonah 3:10; 4:11). Yet, they eventually went back to their evil ways. How does Nahum describe Nineveh? Why will experience the Lord’s judgement?

7) What imagery does he use when describing what the Lord will do to them?

8) Spend a moment and read these verses Matthew 18:15-17, Luke 17:3-4, Ephesians 4:25, and James 5:16. How do these verses describe our responsibility when we see others heading down a path toward sin?

9) Are these conversations easy or difficult for you? Why?

10) What is the purpose of these conversations?
