Dead Stump, Living Roots
Core 52 Chapter: 6
Job 14:1
How frail is humanity! How short is life, how full of trouble!
Job 14:7-9
7 “Even a tree has more hope! If it is cut down, it will sprout again and grow new branches.
8 Though its roots have grown old in the earth and its stump decays,
9 at the scent of water it will bud and sprout again like a new seedling.
Isaiah 11:1
Out of the stump of David’s family will grow a shoot— yes, a new Branch bearing fruit from the old root.
Revelation 22:16-17
16 “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you[ this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star.”
17 The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let the one who hears say, “Come!” Let the one who is thirsty come; and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life.
The hope that Job was looking for,
and the hope Isaiah foretold,
is the hope that Jesus provides.
In the midst of challenging times God works underground.
Ephesians 3:16-19
I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. 17 Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. 18 And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. 19 May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.
Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him.
Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong.
