Worship is Beholding

How do you think of worship?

  1. Leading worship is a beautiful assignment. It allows us to use our giftings for a greater purpose and ultimately the greatest purpose. It is an offering.
  2. It is part of our duty to corporately behold the Lord and He is worth beholding. (See Exodus 19:16-20)
  3. The Holy Spirit is a powerful force in worship that can provide a link to us and God or another way to say that could be the natural to the supernatural. (See Acts 2:2, 2:5-13, 3:6-10)

How does God see worship?

In Exodus 19 God tells Moses that he has set himself before the nation of Israel to make them “a kingdom of priests and a holy nation”

In other words, they will be set apart as stewards and ministers of the presence of God.

In Samuel Whitefield’s book “Discipleship Begins with Beholding” he says “Israel’s DEFINING assignment was beholding the beauty of God to be transformed into His image to accurately represent Him among the nations.”

Following this same pattern, the Tabernacle would later become the CENTRAL symbol for Israel. It was a place where the very presence of God dwelled.

It was located at the center of the city. The tabernacle was meant to be a place where the people of God, could behold God and place him at the literal center of their life.

Where does worship take us?

When the church uses worship as a tool to get where it wants to go instead of a posture of the heart to meet with God, the power of worship is lost.

Seeing is not beholding.

Whitefield says in his book, “Beholding beauty produces fascination, and fascination is the best way to transform a person.”

Paul is a great example of a moment of behold creating a great transformation in a person’s life.

Paul’s conversion and name change was entirely due to him beholding Jesus.

“The first thing Paul discovered was Jesus’ deep identification with His people; Paul had persecuted Jesus Himself by persecuting His people.” (Discipleship Begins with Beholding by Samuel Whitefield)

As a worship leader it is essential that our eyes are fixed on Jesus and that we are transformed because of it.
