Background on Psalm 119
- Longest chapter in the Bible, longer than 17 books in the New
- Testament Acrostic pattern, using the Hebrew alphabet, each section being 8 verses
Key Truth: God’s word is
for every season of life
Eight words are used throughout the psalm to describe God’s word
- Law – Most common term used in this psalm, God’s revelation to man
- Judgments, Rules – God’s word for common human situations
- Testimonies – God’s covenant witness from His word to our actions
- Precepts – Details to take action, not indifferent to what God says
- Statutes – Fixed and determined, engraved; permanence of Scripture
- Commandments – The straight and inherent authority of God’s word
- Word – The most general term used, God’s truth in any form
- Promise – Similar to “word”, idea of something to hold on to
