PRAYER

Lord of Creation,
create in us a new rhythm of life
composed of hours that sustain rather than stress,
of days that deliver rather than destroy.

Lord of Liberation,
by the rhythm of your truth,
set us free from the bondage and baggage that break us,
from the Pharaohs and fellows who fail us,
from the plans and pursuits that prey upon us.

Lord of Resurrection,
may we be raised into the rhythm of your new life,
dead to deceitful calendars,
dead to fleeting friend requests,
dead to the empty peace of our accomplishments.

To our packed-full planners, we bid, “Peace!”
To our over-caffeinated consciences, we say, “Cease!”
To our suffocating selves, Lord, grant release.

Drowning in a sea of deadlines and death chimes,
we rest in you, our lifeline.
By your ever-restful grace,
allow us to enter your rhythm and rest.

In the name of our Creator,
our Liberator,
our Resurrection and Life,
we pray.
Amen.

SERMON

1 Timothy 4:7b-8 NRSV - Train yourself in godliness, for while physical training is of some value, godliness is valuable in every way, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.

QUESTION: How can we train for healthier spiritual rhythms?

Ritual: (of an action) arising from convention or habit.

POINT: The problem is not that we

habits, goals, or rituals but that we likely have too many.

1 Corinthians 6:12 NRSV - All things are permitted for me, but not all things are beneficial. All things are permitted for me, but I will not be dominated by anything.

1 Kings 8:56-58 (MSG)
“Blessed be God, who has given peace to his people Israel just as he said he’d do. Not one of all those good and wonderful words that he spoke through Moses has misfired. May God, our very own God, continue to be with us just as he was with our ancestors-may he never give up and walk out on us. May he keep us centered and devoted to him, following the life path he has cleared, watching the signposts, and walking at the pace and rhythms he laid down for our ancestors.

QUESTION: Is God getting the best of us? Or, just what’s left?
