1 “With Christ as my witness, I speak with utter truthfulness. My conscience and the Holy Spirit confirm it. 2 My heart is filled with bitter sorrow and unending grief…

3 for my people, my Jewish brothers and sisters. I would be willing to be forever cursed—cut off from Christ!—if that would save them.” Romans 9:1-3 (NLT)

I. OVERVIEW OF ROMANS 9-11

Theme: How God’s plan for the Jews demonstrates his character.

Chapter 9: The

of God

Chapter 10: The

of God

Chapter 11: The

of God

II. HOW THE JEWS WERE GOD’S “CHOSEN PEOPLE” (9:1-5)
Paul lists 8 special privileges the Jews were given by God.

1.- ADOPTION
2.- REVEALED GLORY
3.- COVENANTS
4.- LAW
5.- TEMPLE WORSHIP
6.- PROMISES
7.- PATRIARCHS
8.- THE MESSIAH

“and from them, by physical descent, came the Christ, who is God over all, praised forever., Amen.” Romans 9:5

“I will bless those who bless you and curse those who treat you with contempt. All the families on earth will be blessed through you.” Genesis 12:3

III. ON WHAT BASIS DID GOD CHOOSE ISRAEL? (9:6-18)
God’s choice of the Jews illustrates 4 principles of salvation.

1.- SALVATION IS BASED ON GOD’S

, NOT OUR (vs. 6-7)

Well then, has God failed to fulfill his promise to Israel? No, for not all who are born into the nation of Israel are truly members of God’s people! Romans 9:6

“A man is not a Jew if he’s only one outwardly. Nor is circumcision merely outward and physical. No, a man is a Jew if he is one inwardly and circumcision is circumcision of the heart by the Spirit.” Romans 2:28

12 Jew and Gentile are the same in this respect. They have the same Lord, who gives generously to all who call on him. 13 For “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Romans 10:12–13

Racial Israel = Unbelieving Jews & Believing Jews
Real Israel = Believing Jews & Believing Gentiles

2.- SALVATION IS BASED ON GOD’S

, NOT OUR . (vs. 8-9)

8 This means that Abraham’s physical descendants are not necessarily children of God. Only the children of the promise are considered to be Abraham’s children. 9 For God had promised, “I will return about this time next year, and Sarah will have a son.” Romans 9:8–9

3.- SALVATION IS BASED ON GOD’S

, NOT OUR . (vs. 10-13)

10 And not only that, but Rebekah conceived children through one man, our father Isaac. 11 For though her sons had not been born yet or done anything good or bad, so that God’s purpose according to election might stand—12 not from works but from the one who calls—she was told, The older will serve the younger., 13 As it is written: I have loved Jacob, but I have hated Esau.” Romans 9:10-13

“I’ve turned his mountains into a wasteland and left his inheritance to the desert jackals.” Malachi 1:3

4.- SALVATION IS BASED ON GOD’S

, NOT OUR . (vs. 14-18)

14 “Are we saying, then, that God was unfair? Of course not! 15 For God said to Moses, “I will show mercy to anyone I choose, and I will show compassion to anyone I choose.” 16 So it is God who decides to show mercy. We can neither choose it nor work for it. Romans 9:14–16

IV. MAN’S OBJECTION (9:19-21)
20 No, don’t say that. Who are you, a mere human being, to argue with God? Should the thing that was created say to the one who created it, “Why have you made me like this?” 21 When a potter makes jars out of clay, doesn’t he have a right to use the same lump of clay to make one jar for decoration and another to throw garbage into? Romans 9:20–21

8 ”My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. 9 For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways nd my thoughts higher than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:8-9 (NLT)

Conclusion: (Romans 9:25-33)
