Genesis 26:1-35

26:2-22 | Isaac’s circumstances - and sins - were similar to his father’s. So was God’s covenant with him. Isaac’s personal blessings were dependent on his obedience to God and were therefore conditional; but the covenant itself was dependent on God’s character and was therefore unconditional (15:17-21).

26:6-11 | Unfortunately sons sometimes take on the sins of the fathers. Only through heaven’s healing can families break generational sin.

26:23-25 | The LORD appeared to him, demonstrating that Isaac was blessed in the same manner as his father (12:7-8). Like Abraham, Isaac built an alter (13:4; 22:9).

26:24 | In the OT, men of God were called servants of the Lord (Josh. 14:7; 24:29; Ps. 89:3; Isa. 20:3). Here, God calls Abraham My servant. Nothing is more desirable than to be a servant of the Living God (Mark 10:42-45; Gal. 5:13).

26:26-33 | Isaac’s dealings with Abimelech resembled his father’s (21:22-34), with much the same result. When the Philistines observed that Isaac was the blessed of the LORD, it was a remarkable testimony, since they hated God. If God’s people keep pressing forward, doing His will, their lives may impact even their enemies (Matt. 5:44).
