Week 3

Text: Mark 1:35–37 | Topic(s): Work, Silence, Rest
Big Idea of the Message: As Jesus begins his public ministry of preaching, he seeks time apart with God in prayer.
Application Point: Faced with any new or significant task, a time spent alone in silence and prayer empowers us for the work ahead.

Take some time to share:
• One thing that you are thankful for this week.

• One thing you need.

• How can the group help?

Bible Discussion: Read Mark 1:35-37
• What about this passage stands out to you as you read?

• Read the passages just before and after this week’s text.

• Why do you think Jesus needed this time away? Is it too odd to think that Jesus himself may have need to recharge his batteries?

• Who do the disciples remind you of when they go off in search of Jesus? (*hint: if you have ever tried to go to the bathroom alone while children or clingy pets are in the house, you may be able to identify with Jesus’s dilemma)

Application:
“Blessed is he who is alone in the strength of fellowship and blessed is he who keeps the fellowship in the strength of aloneness” –Dietrich Bonhoeffer

• Are you the type of person who is energized by big events and large crowds or who is completely drained afterward?

• What tools do you rely on to recharge your batteries?

• How do you draw the line between solitude and loneliness?

CHALLENGE: Sometimes we are so busy that we convince ourselves that having our basic needs met is equal to self-care…it is not. Make time for yourself this week to step away from the busyness of life and recharge.
