Message Notes:
Colossal = Massive, Immense, Of Exceptional Degree
IN THIS SERIES:
We want to give colossal focus to 4 areas:
Part 1 – The Supremacy of Jesus
Part 2 – Our Thinking
Part 3 – Our Living
Part 4 – Our Service
Main Idea:
Jesus is God. I am not.
I need to change to be like him. Not ask Him to change to be more like me.
Colossians Chapter 1:
Vs. 1-14
(Opening greeting to believers in Colossae. Thanking Epaphras)…
Vs. 15-20
Christ Is Supreme
Vs. 15-20
15 Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation, 16 for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see—such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through him and for him. 17 He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together. 18 Christ is also the head of the church, which is his body. He is the beginning, supreme over all who rise from the dead. So he is first in everything. 19 For God in all his fullness was pleased to live in Christ, 20 and through him God reconciled everything to himself. NLT
Vs. 22-23,28
22 Yet now he has reconciled you to himself through the death of Christ in his physical body. As a result, he has brought you into his own presence, and you are holy and blameless as you stand before him without a single fault. 23 But you must continue to believe this truth and stand firmly in it. Don’t drift away from the assurance you received when you heard the Good News…28 So we tell others about Christ, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all the wisdom God has given us. We want to present them to God, perfect[g] in their relationship to Christ. NLT
Main Idea:
Jesus is God. I am not.
I need to change to be like him. Not ask Him to change to be more like me.
TAKE HOME:
Jesus clearly says who He is.
Making Him anything less is putting ourselves ahead of God, which is idolatry.
John 6:35
Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. NIV
John 8:12
“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” NIV
John 10:9
I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture. NIV
John 10:14-15
“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep. NIV
John 11:25
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; NIV
John 15:5
“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. NIV
John 14:6
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. NIV
Main Idea:
Jesus is God. I am not.
I need to change to be like him. Not ask Him to change to be more like me.
Why would we to make Him change for us:
We don’t know the real him.
John 3:30
(Jesus leading by example relating to the father)
“He must become greater; I must become less.” NIV
Matthew 16:24-25
24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me. 25 If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. NLT
So how do I do that?
Follow Jesus’ example. He must become greater. I must become less.
Main Idea:
Jesus is God. I am not.
I need to change to be like him. Not ask Him to change to be more like me.
