The Church Defined: Our Role in it
June 12, 2022
  • Psalm 68:1–6 (NIV)
    1 May God arise, may his enemies be scattered;
    may his foes flee before him.
    2 May you blow them away like smoke—
    as wax melts before the fire,
    may the wicked perish before God.
    3 But may the righteous be glad
    and rejoice before God;
    may they be happy and joyful.
    4 Sing to God, sing in praise of his name,
    extol him who rides on the clouds ;
    rejoice before him—his name is the Lord.
    5 A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows,
    is God in his holy dwelling.
    6 God sets the lonely in families,
    he leads out the prisoners with singing;
    but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land.

The Church is the of Christ

  • Jesus’ Own Words:
  • Luke 4:18–19 (NKJV)
    The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
    Because He has anointed Me
    To preach the gospel to the poor;
    He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
    To proclaim liberty to the captives
    And recovery of sight to the blind,
    To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
    To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”

  • Three Misunderstood Necessities
    - The

    - The Spirit
    - Our in God’s

  • Acts 1:4-14
    4  And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; 5  for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” 8  But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
    8  But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” 9  Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight.
    12  Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey. 13  And when they had entered, they went up into the upper room where they were staying: Peter, James, John, and Andrew; Philip and Thomas; Bartholomew and Matthew; James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot; and Judas the son of James. 14  These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.

The Church Started with people who came together and were given God’s to be

  • 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 (NKJV) “And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10  Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

The Holy

- John 14:15-18 (NKJV) “If you love Me, keep My commandments. And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever– 17  the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. 18  I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.

The Church Cannot itself from the Holy Spirit

  • Romans 8:14 (NKJV) 14  For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.
  • Romans 8:15 (NKJV) 15  For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.”
  • Romans 15:19 (NKJV) 19  in mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God, so that from Jerusalem and round about to Illyricum I have fully preached the gospel of Christ.

  • Mark 16:15–18 (NKJV) “And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18 they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
