Hebrews 13:1-25

This chapter gives practical examples of how one might serve the living God rather than turn away.

13:2 | Scholars generally agree that this passage refers to the time when Abraham went out of his way to help three strangers who were passing by his tent (Gen. 18-19:1). Two were angels and the other was the Son of God Himself (Matt. 25:35-40; Rom. 12:13; 1 Pet. 4:9).

13:4 | The bed undefiled conveys the idea that the Lord approves sexual intimacy between a husband and wife. However, the sins of fornicators and adulterers have particularly damaging consequences (Gen. 2:24; Prov. 5:18-19; 1 Cor. 6:9-10; Gal. 5:19-21; Eph. 5:5-6; 1 Thess. 4:6).

13:5 | Covetousness is a sin of the mind that causes a person to lust after things belonging to someone else (Ex. 20:17). Content could also be translated satisfied, adequate, competent, or sufficient.

13:8 | The immutability or unchangeableness of God and His Son Jesus Christ is a truth taught consistently throughout the Sriptures (Ps. 102:25-27; John 8:58; James 1:17). Christians can trust in God’s promises to save them, provide for them, and enable them to persevere to the end.

13:9 | The exact opposite of being established is being carried about with various and strange doctrines, This happens when a person loses sight of the unchanging nature and message of Christ (Gal. 1 :8).

13:17 | The key to harmony and prosperity in the church is both good leaders and good followers. When God’s people follow God’s leaders with positive, supportive, and submissive attitudes, joy reigns in the church and in the leaders’ hearts (Isa. 62:6; Rom. 13:1; Phil. 4:1; 1 Thess. 2:19-20; 3:9; 5:12-13). But believers are not called to blind obedience either. Church elders or pastors must gently and effectively watch out of the souls in their congregations, knowing that one day they will give an account for their leadership (Luke 12:48; Acts 20:28; 2 Cor. 12:15; James 3:1; 1 Pet. 5:2-4).

God has given His people everything to endure to the end without giving up. God’s goal is for each believer to be complete in or equipped for every good work.
