Psalm 13: 1-6

David’s Condition

“How long, O LORD? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? 2 How long must I take counsel in my soul and have sorrow in my heart all day? How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?” —Psalm 13:1-2

“But Zion said, “The LORD has forsaken me; my Lord has forgotten me. 15 “Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you. 16 Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are continually before me.” —Isaiah 49:14-16

David’s Cry

“Consider and answer me, O LORD my God; light up my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death, four lest my enemy say, “I have prevailed over him,” lest my foes rejoice because I am shaken.” —Psalm 13:3-4

David’s Consolation

“But I have trusted in your steadfast love; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation. 6 I will sing to the LORD because he has dealt bountifully with me.” —Psalm 13:5-6

Let’s Talk About It

Everyone experiences disappointment or sadness to some degree. In Psalm 13, David demonstrated what it means to trust God in tough times. David cried out for God’s consideration and revelation, feeling forgotten, forsaken, sorrowful, and downcast. As he prayed, his perspective changed, and he could rejoice even though his circumstances remained the same. When we face difficult and dark times, we must resist self-pity and trust that God knows what’s best for us and can use even our challenging experiences for our good and His glory.

Here’s My Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, help me anchor my life entirely into you so that I can bear testimony of your goodness and faithfulness in life and death, joy and sorrow, sickness, and health. Help me when I need comfort and consolation. Please help me to cry out to you. Come and meet with me so I may find trusting, rejoicing, and singing for your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
