How to Get What You Really Want, P2

What do you think you want?

We want our way

If we always get our way, we will lose our way

If we always get our way, we oftentimes will get in the way of ourselves

If we get what we want now, we may not get what we really want later

Lurking in the shadows of what we want is what we value

Value = What’s important

What do you value?

1. Relationally

2. Financially

3. Character

4. Legacy

We will never get what we really want until we discover what we really value

Choosing valuable is unnatural

“I do not understand what I do.” -Romans 7:15

“For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.” – Romans 7:15

“And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. – Romans 7:16

“As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me.” -Romans 7:17

“For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.” -Romans 7:18

“For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing.” Romans 7:19

What we naturally want is often in conflict with what we ultimately want

Our human nature is flawed
- Cheating, Lying, Racism, Adultury, Me First, Revenge

“When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear” – Galatians 5:19

“sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures” - Galatians 5:19

“idolatry, sorcery” Galatians 5:20

“hostility, quarrelling, jealousy” Galatians 5:20

“outbursts of anger, selfish ambition” Galatians 5:20

“dissension, division, envy, drunkenness…” - Galatians 5:20-21

“but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed.” -James 1:14

“Then after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death” – James 1:15

“Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters” -James 1:16

Don’t Be Deceivied

Don’t trade ultimate for immediate; ultimate want for natural want.

3 Questions for Next Time
1. What do I really want?

2. What’s dragging me away?

3. How long do I plan to let what i naturally want drag me from what i ultimately want?
