Christianity, at its foundation, is not a set of
to be understood, but a relationship of
into which we are eternally invited.
• Last week, Jesus began explaining the role of the Spirit in daily life. Jesus’ description of the Holy Spirit, or as some used to called Him “The Holy Ghost,” is not a gift we receive after salvation through some kind of additional ritual. Instead, we are sealed by Him at the moment we believe in Jesus.
• Today we continue our journey through John 14 to understand more about the person and work of the Holy Spirit.
John 14:22-31
22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?”
• From the previous verses Judas has understood that Jesus is leaving, but in one sense He is not leaving because He is sending the Holy Spirit to live in them. He is coming to manifest Jesus in the daily life of the disciples.
• For three years, they have followed Jesus as He has ministered to the people. He has been the leader on the
23 Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me.
• “we will come and make our home with him” >> same word from v. 2 about the Father’s house. While Jesus is preparing a place for us, the Holy Spirit is the
• A primary theme for John is that Jesus came in His fullness to dwell with us >> John 1:14 | And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
• This fullness was the very presence of God >> Colossians 1:19 | For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell,

25 “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

• Mac Arthur >> The Holy Spirit energized the hearts and minds of the apostles in their ministry, helping them to produce the NT Scripture. The disciples had failed to understand many things about Jesus and what he taught; but because of this supernatural work, they came to an inerrant and accurate understanding of the Lord and his work, and recorded it in the Gospels and the rest of the NT Scriptures (2 Tim. 3:16; 2 Pet. 1:20–21). See note on John 16:7.
• The Holy Spirit does His work in us by helping us
// Holiness >> Psalm 119:11 | I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
// Guidance >> Psalm 119:105 | Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
// Swiss Army Knife >> 2 Timothy 3:16-17 | All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

• ESV >> The expression peace (Hb. shalom) had a much richer connotation than the English word does since it conveyed not merely the absence of conflict and turmoil but also the notion of positive blessing, especially in terms of a right relationship with God. This may be manifested most clearly amid persecution and tribulation.
• Mattthew 10:16-20 | “Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. 17 Beware of men, for they will deliver you over to courts and flog you in their synagogues, 18 and you will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them and the Gentiles. 19 When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour. 20 For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
• Philllipians 4:7 | And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
28 You heard me say to you, ‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29 And now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe. 30 I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no claim on me, 31 but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.
• How can Jesus remain calm in the face of what’s coming? The same Spirit that would give the disciples peace later gives Jesus peace in these moments.
