“Peace of Mind – Busyness & Burnout”
Sunday, March 26, 2023
We are wrapping up our Peace of Mind series today and before we get to this last message, wanted to recap some of the key things we went over these past five weeks:
• God’s Word and Voice Will Give Us New Thought Patterns to Replace Our Unhealthy Thought Patterns.
• We Combat an Anxious Mind by Praying… By Waiting… By Worshipping.
• We Don’t Have to Face Our Depression Alone… God is With Us, and He Has Placed Us in His Family.
• Sometimes We Need New Tracks to Our Mental Playlist.
This morning we are finishing the series by looking at the Busy and Burned-Out Mind.
Jesus Was Not Busy or Hurried…
Mark 5:22-28 – The Story of Jairus’ Daughter
One of the synagogue rulers, named Jairus, came there. Seeing Jesus, he fell at his feet and pleaded earnestly with him, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.” So Jesus went with him…
While Jesus was still speaking, some men came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue ruler. “Your daughter is dead,” they said. “Why bother the teacher any more?”
John 11:1-6 – The Story of Lazarus
Now a man named Lazarus was sick. …So [Mary and Martha] sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one you love is sick.” When he heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death.” Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. Yet when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days.
“Hurry is the great enemy of spiritual life in our day. You must ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life.” – Dallas Willard

What Is the Result of a Busy Mind?
• A Mind That Can’t Rest!
Rest is Modeled by God – Gen. 2:2, “…on the seventh day He rested from all His work.”
Rest is Mandated by God – Exodus 20:8, “Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy.”
Rest is Constantly Encouraged in Scripture…
- Rest is Necessary…
- Rest is a Gift…
- Rest is Worship!
And yet the commandment to rest is the only one we brag about breaking!
• A Mind That Can’t Focus!
• A Mind That Can’t Prioritize!
• A Mind that Leads to Burnout!
How Can My Mind Become Less Busy?
Less Stimulation - (See “Social Dilemma”Graphic)
Mark 6:31
Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to quiet place and get some rest.”
Matthew 14:13
When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place.
More Interaction
2 John 12 (NIV)
I have much to write to you, but I do not want to use paper and ink. Instead, I hope to visit you and talk with you face to face, so that our joy may be complete.
3 John 14 (NIV)
I hope to see you soon, and we will talk face to face.
I Thessalonians 2:18-20 (NIV)
For we wanted to come to you… for what is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which we will glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes? Is it not you? Indeed, you are our glory and joy.
Less Aware of BIG World
Matthew 6:31-34
So do not worry, saying, “What shall we eat?” or “What shall we drink?” or “What shall we wear?” For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. …Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
More Aware of SMALL World
