Sermon Overview

Introduction

Back to the life of David. Where are we? David has become a great king uniting the land of Israel under one rule. But he is not a perfect king or father. He has sinned, committed adultery and murder to cover up things. He has not taken justice for his daughter’s rape. He has not stepped up and been the father that he needs to be. Instead, he has chosen to take a backseat and let his children do whatever and not risk hurting their feelings.

Obedience and Honor

Absalom begins undermining his father, getting ready to take his father’s place. As children grow, there is a growing idea of teaching them less about just obeying and more about responsibility and honor. Let’s define those terms in today’s society: Responsibility - moral, legal, or mental accountability. Honor - a good name, reputation, treating with respect.

Absalom’s Actions

Absalom steals the hearts of the people of Israel and enters Jerusalem, taking over his father’s harem and dishonoring his father’s name. David fails to take responsibility for his own choices and his family, leading to revolt and rebellion.

Next Steps

Reflect on how to support and guide our children, whether you are a parent, guardian, or concerned individual. Learn from David’s mistakes and model your life according to Christ’s teachings.
