Common ways our brains respond to uncertainty:

(what will happen next?)
(I will control what happens next!)
(only bad things will happen next)

What does the Bible have to say about these responses to uncertainty?

Anxiety: I can be certain of

.

(Jesus) “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
John 16:33

We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our mortal body. 2 Corinthians 4:10,11

Aggression: I can be certain of

(Jesus) “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also.” Luke 6:27b-29

Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Romans 12:21

Be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not
produce the righteousness of God. James 1:19b-20 ESV

Despair: I can be certain of

He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away. Revelation 21:4

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. Write out in the space below one thing you have been anxious about recently. This could be something at work, in family, in a relationship, about finances, health, something happening in society.
Based on what you learned in this week’s message, what would Jesus say to you about your anxiety?

  2. Read Romans 8:28. René urged us to remember we are promised both trouble and triumph. In fact, we are promised God will redeem all things for good. What is one way you’ve seen God use some trouble for good in your own life?

  3. Read Luke 6:27-29. How does the strategy of Jesus totally differ from the world’s strategy in a fight?
  4. Read Revelation 21:4,5. How does this ultimate promise of God ease your sense of uncertainty?
