INTRODUCTION: We are given many names of God to use in different seasons of life. Is there a particular name that you have found yourself using during this season of Lent? What (feelings, circumstances) have inspired its use?
READ: Genesis 17: 1-24
Begin the time by praying together and inviting El Shaddai into this conversation.
DISCUSS
1. What words come to mind as you reflect on the content of the message? (Some examples might
include: “promise”, “everlasting”, “expansion”, “strength”, “nourish”.)
2. Read Romans 4:16 - 25 and Genesis 17: 3-8. God makes a promise to Abraham that goes beyond the
individual, beyond the immediate family, and spans future generations. Might remembering the God-of-
an-everlasting-covenant expand how we pray in our daily prayers? In what way?
3. Describe how God dealt with Abraham. What aspects of your spiritual father Abraham’s journey can
encourage you?
4. Circumcision was to be a visible sign of God’s promise and our response to it. Do you have any
practical, visible signs of this covenant relationship in your life?
5. How does it feel to have feminine metaphors (nursing, sustaining) associated with the name “Almighty”
?
6. Do you see the strength of God flowing into your life from surprising or even lowly sources? How?
PRAY:
You have called my name and you call me your child. As I grow to know you better, I will call Your names that reflect the many sides of You. Today I call you El Shaddai. I want to bring to You the areas of my life where I feel weak, dissatisfied, cranky and impatient. Only You can satisfy these longings. You are the mighty one. You nourish me and help me grow strong. You alone are worthy of the highest praise and all my love. I know that whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of Shaddai / God Almighty.
