Isaiah 9:2,6-7 | 2 The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned… 6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.

Getting to Know You:
If your life became a movie, what actor/actress would you choose to narrate your story? What actor/actress would you choose to play you? Would your movie be a stand-alone or more of a trilogy?
Quick Review:
Was there anything about this week’s message that was surprising to you? Was there a specific point or Scripture that made you want to elbow the person sitting next to you? Or maybe made them want to elbow you? What was the one thing you remember most from the message?
Digging Deeper:
This week we learned about the prophet Isaiah. The book of Isaiah is in the Old Testament and is a message of warning and hope. He tells us about a child who will be born some 700 years later who will turn out to be Jesus. When you read the Bible more in-depth, you discover this woven tapestry that spans centuries in its writing. Isaiah’s prophecies are fulfilled in Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. In the Scripture we read this week, Isaiah uses some very specific names for the Messiah who will be born.

Which of the names that Isaiah uses speaks to you on how you would describe Jesus in your life? Perhaps each one of these names resonated with you. Give an example of how God has revealed Himself with each of these names in your life.
Read Isaiah 53:1-12
Isaiah 53:1-12 | 1 Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? 2 He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. 3 He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem. 4 Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted. 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. 6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth. 8 By oppression and judgment he was taken away. Yet who of his generation protested? For he was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my people he was punished. 9 He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth. 10 Yet it was the Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the Lord makes his life an offering for sin, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand. 11 After he has suffered, he will see the light of life and be satisfied; by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many, and he will bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, and he will divide the spoils with the strong, because he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.
Isaiah 53 describes the prophecy of a messiah who is known to be a suffering servant. What did you read that is fulfilled later with the crucifixion of Jesus? Does the book of Isaiah make you think differently about the Bible?
What are your thoughts about something written 700 years before Jesus being so specific and detailed to what you read in the New Testament?
