Confused But Trusting
Christmas Mood Series

TEXT: Matthew 1:18-25 (NASB)

Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. 19 And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly. 20 But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” 22 Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: 23 “Behold, the virgin shall be with child and shall bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which translated means, “God with us.” 24 And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife, 25 but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he called His name Jesus. —Matthew 1:18-25

God didn’t get Joseph’s

before acting. Can you imagine the real-life shock of these words: “Mary had been betrothed (pledged) to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 1:18).

God had “

” Joseph into a difficult position—would He ever do the same to us?

God’s sovereignty. That means, that God is in control, He reigns and He decides what is best, and how He wants to work His plans in my life.

The first Christmas was not about beautiful presents and happy holidays. The first Christmas was all about finding a cure for

. Sin that wrecks every human life, sin that damns every soul to hell, sin that pollutes the entire world. It is because of sin that there are tears and pain and war and fighting and anxiety and discord and unrest and fear and worry and sickness and death and famine and earthquakes and pollution. All those things are the direct result of sin. Sin disturbs and disrupts every human relationship, whether between man and man, man and creation, or man and God.

The Bible says Jesus Christ came into the world to

us from sin. That’s the reason for His coming.

When we trust God in the

…we can have right relationships with those around us.

Joseph resisted the urge to act irrationally.

God gave Joseph a dream, a dream that would

his life forever.

Engagement, unexpected pregnancy, and an out-of-this-world explanation would be enough to give anyone dreams.

There is no indication that Joseph heard anything else from God until after the baby was born. He remained

to God’s instructions for months, all based on one dream!

on God in the Chaos of this Christmas season and we position ourselves closer to Him so that He can guide us in whatever way He pleases…and we will be tuned in and obey His leading.
