Fully Devoted Followers // Week 1 - “Seed Sowers”

(Mk. 4:1-20 – NIV). 1 Again Jesus began to teach by the lake. The crowd that gathered around him was so large that he got into a boat and sat in it out on the lake, while all the people were along the shore at the water’s edge. 2 He taught them many things by parables, and in his teaching said: 3 “Listen! A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants, so that they did not bear grain. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew and produced a crop, some multiplying thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times.”
9 Then Jesus said, “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.” 10 When he was alone, the Twelve and the others around him asked him about the parables. 11 He told them, “The secret of the kingdom of God has been given to you. But to those on the outside everything is said in parables 12 so that, “‘they may be ever seeing but never perceiving, and ever hearing but never understanding;
otherwise they might turn and be forgiven!’” 13 Then Jesus said to them, “Don’t you understand this parable? How then will you understand any parable? 14 The farmer sows the word. 15 Some people are like seed along the path, where the word is sown. As soon as they hear it, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in them. 16 Others, like seed sown on rocky places, hear the word and at once receive it with joy. 17 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. 18 Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; 19 but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful. 20 Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop—some thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times what was sown.”

*Parent Disciples/Fully Devoted Followers view LIFE differently.
• Priorities – Matt. 6:33 – GNT. 33 Instead, be concerned above everything else with the Kingdom of God and with what he requires of you, and he will provide you with all these other things.

• Kingdom-focused – Col. 3:1-2 – NIV. 1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.

• They scatter “seed.”

*Have you been “spiritually ?”
• Have you forgotten your #1 MISSION?
- (II Cor. 5:20 – GWT; I Cor. 9:19 & 22b – NLT; Matt. 28:19-20 – NIV).
• Do you hang out with anyone WHO is ? (Matt. 9:12 – NIV).

  • Mark. 4:1-9 – NLT. 1 Once again Jesus began teaching by the lakeshore. A very large crowd soon gathered around him, so he got into a boat. Then he sat in the boat while all the people remained on the shore. 2 He taught them by telling many stories in the form of parables, such as this one:
3 “Listen! A farmer went out to plant some seed. 4 As he scattered it across his field, some of the seed fell on a footpath, and the birds came and ate it. 5 Other seed fell on shallow soil with underlying rock. The seed sprouted quickly because the soil was shallow. 6 But the plant soon wilted under the hot sun, and since it didn’t have deep roots, it died. 7 Other seed fell among thorns that grew up and choked out the tender plants so they produced no grain. 8 Still other seeds fell on fertile soil, and they sprouted, grew, and produced a crop that was thirty, sixty, and even a hundred times as much as had been planted!” 9 Then he said, “Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand.”

    I. (3) TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS TEXT.

1) THE FARMER

HIS JOB.
• He has ONE job to carry out.

2) THE FARMER IS .
• What keeps the farmer going?
- LOVE
- END RESULTS
• These were the same two things that kept Jesus going too.
- It BROKE His HEART to see people go to HELL.
- Does it break yours?

3) THE FARMER IS .
• He doesn’t just scatter the “seed” in one certain area. He SCATTERS the “seed” EVERYWHERE
• He scatters the seed on ALL soils (Matt. 9:37-38 - NLT). * 37 He said to his disciples, “The harvest is great, but the workers are few. 38 So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields.*

CONCLUSION:

WE MUST NEVER FORGET OUR #1 JOB IS TO MAKE SURE PEOPLE GET TO THE SAFETY OF THE ROCK.
