How do I live at peace with others in a world designed for division?
1. Focus on
Accept the one whose faith is weak, without quarreling over disputable matters. One person’s faith allows them to eat anything, but another, whose faith is weak, eats only vegetables. The one who eats everything must not treat with contempt the one who does not, and the one who does not eat everything must not judge the one who does, for God has accepted them. Romans 14:1-3 NIV
2. Realize
Who are you to judge someone else’s servant? To their own master, they stand
or fall. And they will stand, for the Lord is able to make them stand. Romans 14:4
3. Assume
One person considers one day more sacred than another; another considers every day alike. Each of them should be fully convinced in their own mind. Whoever regards one day as special does so to the Lord. Whoever eats meat does so to the Lord, for they give thanks to God; and whoever abstains does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God. Romans 14:5-6
4. See
Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister… If your brother or sister is distressed because of what you eat, you are no longer acting in love. Do not by your eating destroy someone for whom Christ died… For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. Romans 14:13,15-17
5. Be
If you serve Christ with this attitude, you will please God, and others will approve of you, too. Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification. Romans 14:18-19 NLT/NIV
So whatever you believe about these things, keep it between yourself and God. Romans 14:22a
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
- Read Romans 14:1-4 and review the notes. Which of the points is hardest for you? Why?
- Read John 17:23. What did Jesus say would happen when believers live in unity? Is that happening now? Why not?
- Is there a person or a group you tend to judge—or even view with contempt? Is there a “disputable matter” that you tend to treat like a primary issue? Has it ever caused a problem in a relationship? What does Romans 14:22 advise? How can you apply this practically in your own life?
