Ephesians 5:19-20
Psalms, Hymns & Spiritual Songs
Jeremy Cagle
Read Ephesians 5:1-21 and summarize the passage for the group. Tell everyone how it fits into the surrounding verses and the rest of the Book of Ephesians as a whole.
Describe the style of music in the church that you grew up in. How has that impacted the way that you look at the subject of worship today? How did this morning’s sermon challenge or encourage you in this area?
What does it mean to be filled with the Spirit in verse 18 and how does that relate to what Paul says in verses 19-20? How is this different from what we normally associate with being filled with Him? How is it different from the wild displays that are typically associated with the Spirit on television?
Explain the phrase “speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs” in verse 19. How do we do that and why is God so interested in our words when we worship? Why is he so interested in our doctrine?
Now explain the phrase “singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord.” How do we do that and why is God so interested in our sincerity and genuineness? Why is He so interested in our heart and how does this change our priorities in worship?
