At Trailhead, we believe that church is not just about growing in God’s Word but doing so in community. We have designed this study guide to help you follow along with Sunday’s message. Study the scriptures, take notes, and then reinforce what you learned by answering a few questions. Ask others to join you in discussion, whether it be with your family or your Trailhead study group. Let’s have church!

Psalm 61:1-4 (NKJV)
1 Hear my cry, O God;
Attend to my prayer.
2 From the end of the earth I will cry to You,
When my heart is overwhelmed;
Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
3 For You have been a shelter for me,
A strong tower from the enemy.
4 I will abide in Your tabernacle forever;
I will trust in the shelter of Your wings. Selah

1) Prayer

Hebrews 4:14-16 (NKJV)
14 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

2) Process

Matthew 11:28-30 (NKJV)
28 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle andlowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

John 8:32 (AMP)
And you will know the truth [regarding salvation], and the truth will set you free [from the penalty of sin].

3) Peace

Isaiah 26:3 (AMP)
You will keep in perfect and constant peace the one whose mind is steadfast [that is, committed and focused on You—in both inclination and character], Because he trusts and takes refuge in You [with hope and confident expectation].

Philippians 4:4-9 (NKJV)
4 Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!
5 Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand. 6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things arejust, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. 9 The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.

2 Samuel 23:1-5 (NKJV)
1 Now these are the last words of David.
Thus says David the son of Jesse; Thus says the man raised up on high, The anointed of the God of Jacob, And the sweet psalmist of Israel: 2 “The Spirit of the Lord spoke by me, And His word was on my tongue. 3 The God of Israel said, The Rock of Israel spoke to me: ‘He who rules over men must be just, Ruling in the fear of God. 4 And he shall be like the light of the morning when the sun rises, A morning without clouds, Like the tender grass springing out of the earth, By clear shining after rain.’ 5 “Although my house is not so with God, Yet He has made with me an everlasting covenant, Ordered in all things and secure. For this is all my salvation and all mydesire; Will He not make it increase?

Discussion Questions

1) Pastor Anna shared that all families need the love of God as a foundation. That may seem obvious to most, but what does that actually mean? What does it look like for a family to prioritize the love of God in everything they do?

2) 2 Samuel 13-18 tells the story of a terrible episode in David’s family’s life that involved sin, abuse, rebellion, murder, and spiritual weakness. Through it all, David still demonstrated grace for his family despite their shortcomings.

Why is it important to show grace with your family? How do you show grace while still standing firm against sin, wrongdoings, rebellion, etc?

3) Pastor Anna gave three things needed to find rest in your family: prayer, process, and peace. Why are all three needed?

What are some things you’ve experienced in your life that have prevented your family from finding rest? How could prayer, process, and peace have helped you in those situations?

Personal Reflection

Are you struggling to experience rest in your family? Write out the things you feel are preventing rest. What steps can you take this week to utilize prayer, process, and peace to address these issues?
