In the story of Joseph, there was a literal dream. In every one of our lives, there is a dream, a vision, a calling, a purpose for your life. As we have minimized God as the Creator of Life and Giver of Purpose, Increasing numbers of people are dealing with insignificance, depression or despair. The truth of God’s word is that every person is created by God in the image of God, on purpose for a purpose!
Jeremiah 1:5 NIV
5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart;I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”
Psalms 139:13 NIV
13 For you created my inmost being;you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
Happiness is not the opposite of depression – purpose is. One of the greatest things about living for God is knowing He has a purpose for you and a future for you…
Whenever God gives a dream, extends a calling, or establishes a purpose for your life, He almost always starts a process.
God is more concerned about character than he is our calling. Before God builds high, He digs deep.If you get to your calling without the character, what is intended to be a blessing can actually be a burden.
What is intended to help you and others can actually cause hurt.
Genesis 39:1 NLT
1 When Joseph was taken to Egypt by the Ishmaelite traders, he was purchased by Potiphar, an Egyptian officer. Potiphar was captain of the guard for Pharaoh, the king of Egypt.
Genesis 39:2-5 NIV
2 The Lord was with Joseph so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master. 3 When his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord gave him success in everything he did, 4 Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned. 5 From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the Lord blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph. The blessing of the Lord was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field.
Genesis 39:6-10 NLT
6 So Potiphar gave Joseph complete administrative responsibility over everything he owned. With Joseph there, he didn’t worry about a thing—except what kind of food to eat!Joseph was a very handsome and well-built young man, 7 and Potiphar’s wife soon began to look at him lustfully. “Come and sleep with me,” she demanded. 8 But Joseph refused. “Look,” he told her, “my master trusts me with everything in his entire household. 9 No one here has more authority than I do. He has held back nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How could I do such a wicked thing? It would be a great sin against God.” 10 She kept putting pressure on Joseph day after day, but he refused to sleep with her, and he kept out of her way as much as possible.
Genesis 39:11-15 NLT
11 One day, however, no one else was around when he went in to do his work. 12 She came and grabbed him by his cloak, demanding, “Come on, sleep with me!” Joseph tore himself away, but he left his cloak in her hand as he ran from the house. 13 When she saw that she was holding his cloak and he had fled, 14 she called out to her servants. Soon all the men came running. “Look!” she said. “My husband has brought this Hebrew slave here to make fools of us! He came into my room to rape me, but I screamed. 15 When he heard me scream, he ran outside and got away, but he left his cloak behind with me.”
Genesis 39:16-20 NLT
16 She kept the cloak with her until her husband came home. 17 Then she told him her story. “That Hebrew slave you’ve brought into our house tried to come in and fool around with me,” she said. 18 “But when I screamed, he ran outside, leaving his cloak with me!” 19 Potiphar was furious when he heard his wife’s story about how Joseph had treated her. 20 So he took Joseph and threw him into the prison where the king’s prisoners were held, and there he remained.
Genesis 39:21-22 NIV
21 the Lord was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden. 22 So the warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made responsible for all that was done there.
Genesis 39:23 NLT
23 The warden had no more worries, because Joseph took care of everything. The Lord was with him and caused everything he did to succeed.
God was WITH Joseph. For believers, it’s not about how things go, it’s about who you know.
Success in life is not the absence of problems, it’s the presence of a person (Jesus) It’s not the absence of storms, it’s the presence of a Savior!
Joseph was: Betrayed by his brothers. Thrown in the pit. His prized possession stolen from him. Sold into slavery. Considered as dead. Falsely accused. Thrown into prison. And yet HE PROSPERED.
Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t succeed in life because of circumstances! Joseph had every excuse and yet He rose above and He prospered!
What was the key to his success?!? The Lord was WITH Joseph.
Genesis 39:2 NIV
2 The Lord was with Joseph so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master.
Genesis 39:3 NLT
3 Potiphar noticed this and realized that the Lord was with Joseph, giving him success in everything he did.
We tend to say, “I want to live FOR God, or do something FOR God.” The Bible more often says, “WITH GOD”
Religion: Man’s forever frustrated attempt to become approved and accepted by God through our own efforts.
Christianity: God’s forever fruitful plan to make us accepted and approved by God through the Cross of Jesus Christ.
Matthew 28:19-20 NLT
19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20 Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Vs. 2: The Lord was “with” Joseph so he “prospered”
The key to prospering is the Presence of the Lord - in your life, in your marriage, in your calling, in your dream and destiny!
While there is an errant message of excess, God is obviously not opposed to prosperity:
Genesis 26:12 NKJV
12 Then Isaac sowed in that land, and reaped in the same year a hundredfold; and the Lord blessed him.
Deuteronomy 29:9 ESV
9 Therefore keep the words of this covenant and do them, that you may prosper in all that you do.
II Kings 18:7 NKJV
7 The Lord was with him; he prospered wherever he went. And he rebelled against the king of Assyria and did not serve him.
3 John 1:2 NKJV
2 Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.
Greek: To come alongside someone carrying a heavy load and help them to move forward along the way.
Hebrew: “To push forward in support” Beware of the FOG (the Favor of God)
Genesis 39:3 NLT
3 Potiphar noticed this and realized that the Lord was with Joseph, giving him success in everything he did.
Genesis 39:4-5 NIV
4 Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant.
2 Chronicles 16:9 ESV
9 For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to give strong support to those whose heart is blameless toward him. You have done foolishly in this, for from now on you will have wars.”
How do we position ourselves to receive this kind of Favor from God?
1 Thessalonians 3:13 NLT
“13 May he, as a result, make your hearts strong, blameless, and holy as you stand before God our Father when our Lord Jesus comes again with all his holy people. Amen.”
1 Thessalonians 3:12 NLT
“12 And may the Lord make your love for one another and for all people grow and overflow, just as our love for you overflows. The favor of God follows those who live for the Glory of God and the Good of others!”
Matthew 5:6 NIV
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
Proverbs 16:20 NLT
20 Those who listen to instruction will prosper;those who trust the Lord will be joyful.
Proverbs 13:4 NLT
4 Lazy people want much but get little, but those who work hard will prosper.
Proverbs 21:5 NLT
5 Good planning and hard work lead to prosperity, but hasty shortcuts lead to poverty.
Psalms 37:11 NASB1995
11 But the humble will inherit the landAnd will delight themselves in abundant prosperity.
