Honor – What is it?
The primary Hebrew word for honor is kavod. The word is central to Old Testament culture and theology; the verb kavod occurs 173x and the noun kavod occurs 200x.
The most common meaning of kavod is “glory.”
The Greek OT (Septuagint/LXX) often translates kavod as doxa.
Hadar is another OT word related to honor, occurring about 40 times. The noun means splendor and majesty, often in a royal sense
In the New Testament there are also two words Doxa and Timē
Most occurrences of timē focus on people.
• Pay to all what is due them…honor to whom honor is due (Rom. 13:7).
• Honor your father and mother (Eph. 6:2).
• Honor widows who are really widows (1 Tim. 5:3; cf. 1 Tim 5:17).
Beyond this social, human-to-human exchange of timē, the word can be used in a theological/spiritual sense. People give timē (“worship,” or “glory”) to God.
[Jesus has all judgment] in order that all may honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him (Jn. 5:23).
The living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to the one who is seated on the throne (Rev. 4:9).
The other key NT word is doxa. This word is the common LXX translation of the Hebrew kavod, and is usually translated as “glory.”
Doxa and timē share a common meaning as it relates to honor. Biblical writers often parallel “glory” and “honor”
I Timothy 5:17 – Elders are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching
John 5:33 – That all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent Him.
John 4:44 – Jesus pointed out that – a prophet is without honor in his own country.
Romans 13:7 – Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxed, pay taxes; if revenue, the revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.
Hebrews 13:4 – Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.
Ephesians 6:1-3 – Children obey your parents in the Lord for this is right. Honor your father and mother – which is the commandment with a promise – so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.
I Corinthians 6:20 – You were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.
Since we were bought with a price and that price was the honor of Jesus, then we should be prepared to put our honor on the line for others as well. We should be willing to honor God with our very lives.
Let us become a people of honor who do not help the world strip, decapitate, and nail God’s anointed leaders and their families to the wall of dishonor even when they fail.
Let us be found honoring people if for no other reason because Jesus took our sin and paid for it with His honor.
Are you living a life of Honor? Does your lifestyle cause people to be able to see His Glory and Majesty?
When you see people fail spiritually, do you talk about them or pray for them? Would you commit to beginning to pray for God’s leaders?
Do people see His glory and honor in you?
Matthew 5:16 - Let your light so shine before men that they see your good works and glorify your Father in Heaven.
