A Light on Your Path: Psalm 119

Message Study Questions

Message Summary

God lights your path by revealing Himself through His word. Although creation itself reveals God, only the revelation of God’s word, the Bible, provides us with a complete proclamation of the mystery of God’s will. God teaches his truth in His word; not the relative, emotional or convenient truth that the world peddles. Straying from God’s Truth is like following a broken compass –the farther you go, the farther off course you will be.

God’s word is both personal and practical. As we apply it in obedience to our lives, it lights our path to guide us forward, and it lights our feet to keep us from stumbling along the way. Every section of Psalm 119 highlights a different aspect of how God’s Word interacts with our lives—guiding, teaching, correcting, and sustaining. The psalmist responded to God’s word with delight, love, meditation, and obedience. If we respond to God’s word in the same way, we too can experience the same benefits—and joy.

  1. What lights your path forward?

  2. What role does God’s word play in your life?

Consider This

Ultimately, God’s word is a revelation of the gospel, the message that contains the secret of how we can have eternal life, and become connected to the Creator of the Universe.

  1. Read Psalm 19:1-4 and Romans 1:20. How has God communicated with all people through creation?

  2. Read Psalm 119:97-105.

    • What synonyms for God’s word do you find in this passage?

    • List the advantages that thinking about God’s word gives to people.

    • Why do you think the psalmist loves God’s word?

    • What is the relationship between obeying God’s word and getting understanding (verse 100)? Why?

  3. How does reading and thinking about God’s word affect you?

  4. What could a person do to increase his or her love for God’s word?

  5. Read Psalm 119:11. What does it mean to hide God’s word in our heart? How does it help us? Why is that important?

  6. Compare and contrast Proverbs 3:5-6 with Psalm 119:105. How do these concepts work together?

  7. Some Christians have taken a self-centered, individualized view of God’s Word – twisting it into their own trinity of wants, needs, and feelings. What part does having an open mind have in avoiding these traps?

  8. Read 2 Timothy 34:16, what does God’s word do for us?

  9. Read Joshua 1:8. What was the way for Joshua’s success? How can this verse apply to having success in our lives today?

Moving Forward – Application

“Ignorance of the Bible means ignorance of Christ.” —Jerome

  1. Think about quality and quantity of time and be intentional. How specifically could you “hide God’s word in your heart” this week?

  2. “Open my eyes to see the wonderful truths in your instructions” (Psalm 119:18). Pray this prayer each day this week as you listen, read, study and meditate on God’s word.

  3. Consider a verse from Psalm 119 and memorize it this week.

  4. Write out your paraphrase of Revelation 1:3.
