“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.” —Deuteronomy 6:4-5 (ESV)

Bible Engagement: Week 8, The Exodus/Moses

Tier 1: Deuteronomy 6-7 Love God in holiness
Tier 2: Deuteronomy 11-15
Tier 3: Deuteronomy 11-16

Tier 1 Questions

  1. Chapter 6 uses the Hebrew word shema which is translated as “hear” or “listen” in English. The “Shema” is also the name for the Jewish prayer of Deuteronomy 6:4-9. Watch this BibleProject video https://bibleproject.com/explore/video/shema-listen/ to learn about the word shema. Notice that there are five more word study videos of significant words in the Shema that add even more meaning to the depth of this prayer. Feel free to watch them before you answer the following questions and record any observations you learned from the video(s).

    • According to verses 3-5, what were the Israelites to shema and why?

• How do verses 6-9 describe the importance and approach to the commands of the Shema?

• God warned the Israelites not to

Him nor follow other gods because He is a God. (Deut. 6:12-15) What were the Israelites to tell their children about their history (v 20) and reason for the commands (v. 24)?

2. Why did God not want the Israelites to make treaties or intermarry with other nations? (see Deut. 7:2-8)

Tiers 2-3 Questions

  1. How does God describe the land He would give the Israelites? (see Deut. 11:9-15; 30-31)

  2. What were the Israelites to do to the places and objects the nations used to worship other gods and what were they to do instead? (see Deut. 12:2-6)

  3. How did God want the community to use the tithe according to Deuteronomy 14:28-29?

  4. What was God’s teaching about debts, caring for the poor, and servants? (see Deut. 15)

Application

  1. According to what you have seen so far in Scripture, why do you think God is a jealous God? Talk to Him about any of His expectations in today’s Scripture that you feel may be harsh.

  2. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any modern idols that draw your attention away from Him. Stop and listen to how He want you to turn away from those idols so you can devote more attention of your heart to Jesus. Make a note of what He is saying to you and ask someone to keep you accountable.
