Isaiah 49:1-26

49:1-13 | This is the second Servant Song. God’s special Servant, Jesus – the ideal Israel who does the work that His servant Israel was supposed to do – has a twofold task: to restore exiled Israel and to be a light to all the nations, bringing salvation to the ends of the earth. A mouth like a sharp sword suggests that the Servant’s weapon of choice will be the words of God (Heb. 4:12; Rev. 1:16; 2:12).

49:14-16 | Zion, the city of Jerusalem, is personified as a desperate woman who believes that God has forsaken her. Yet God’s love is so infinite that an adoring mother will forget to have compassion on her child before He will forget His children.
