SERMON NOTES

Firm Foundation - Zach Lamberson

Matthew 5:17-30 - Jesus as the Fulfillment of the Law

1.The Law is summed up by loving God and others

Jesus said to him, “YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.” On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets. Matthew 22:37-40, NKJV

2.The purpose of the Law is to govern our relationship with God and others

3.Jesus didn’t come to destroy the Law, but fulfill it

4.The Law still has a purpose for believers

But before faith came, we were kept under guard by the law, kept for the faith which would afterward be revealed. Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor. Galatians 3:23-25, NKJV
But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does. James 1:25, NKJV

5.Jesus fulfills the Law

For all who have entered into God’s rest have rested from their labors, just as God did after creating the world. Hebrews 4:10, NLT
The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming—not the realities themselves. For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship. Hebrews 10:1, NIV

6.The principles in the Law still apply to us today

7.Righteousness comes from Jesus, not from following the Law

But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, Titus 3:4-5, NKJV

8 Murder begins in the heart

“Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother.” Matthew 18:15, NKJV

9.Lust also begins in the heart

10.We need to deal severely with sin in our hearts

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, Hebrews 12:1, NIV
