Good News of Great Joy Part 3 - Counselor

December 10, 2023

Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. 11 For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. —Luke 2:10-11

For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful,

, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. —Isaiah 9:6

  • Counselor - to advise, give counsel, counsel, purpose, plan. Exodus 18:19 - first mention.

    So Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “The thing that you do is

    good. 18 Both you and these people who are with you will surely wear yourselves out. For this thing is too much for you; you are not able to perform it by yourself. 19 Listen now to my voice; I will give you counsel, and God will be with you: 23 If you do this thing, and God so commands you, then you will be able to endure, and all this people will also go to their place in peace.” 24 So Moses heeded the voice of his father-in-law and did all that he had said. —Exodus 18:17-19, 23-24

I will bless the Lord who has given me counsel; My heart also instructs me in the night seasons. —Psalm 16:7

  • Counsel is the word used for the advisors that would stand next to Judah’s kings.

Without counsel, plans go awry,
But in the multitude of counselors they are established. —Proverbs 15:22

Where there is no counsel, the people fall;
But in the multitude of counselors there is safety [victory]. —Proverbs 11:14

The way of a fool is right in his own eyes,
But he who heeds counsel is wise. —Proverbs 12:15

he thoughts of the righteous are right,
But the counsels of the wicked are deceitful. —Proverbs 12:5

  • Godly counsel is ALWAYS rooted in the word and it is spoken in love.

Oil and perfume make the heart glad,
So a man’s counsel is sweet to his friend. —Proverbs 27:9

A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold In settings of silver. —Proverbs 25:11

  • Do you seek out wise counsel?
  • Are you open to counsel?
  • Or are you afraid of counsel?
  • Do you love correction or hate correction?

Do not correct a scoffer, lest he hate you;
Rebuke a wise man, and he will love you. —Proverbs 9:8

Do not correct a scoffer [who foolishly ridicules and takes no responsibility for his error] or he will hate you; Correct a wise man [who learns from his error], and he will love you. —Proverbs 9:8 AMP

Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser;
Teach a just man, and he will increase in learning. —Proverbs 9:9

  • A wise person is a person that can , a person that is teachable. And that’s why they are always growing and increasing.

Counselor

1. Jesus is our Counselor, and he continues to be our Counselor the Holy Spirit.

  • And they were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. Mark 1:22
  • “No man ever spoke like this Man!” John 7:46
  • “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”” John 6:68

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. —John 14:26

  • Helper, Gr. Parakletos. Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, Standby

2. Jesus is our Counselor through in His family.

  • He has also put us in a spiritual family with elders and brothers and sisters and pastors and people we can receive input and counsel from.

  • We aren’t meant to figure everything out for ourselves. The figure-it-out-on-my-own attitude oftentimes holds us back.

He began to speak freely (fearlessly and boldly) in the synagogue; but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him with them and expounded to him the way of God more definitely and accurately. —Acts 18:26 AMP

  • Sometimes God gives you gifts you need in that you don’t expect. Stay teachable!

3. Jesus is the Counselor through .

“The Lord God has given Me
The tongue of the learned,
That I should know how to speak
A word in season to him who is weary.
He awakens Me morning by morning,
He awakens My ear
To hear as the learned. —Is 50:4

Personally I am convinced about you, my brothers and sisters, that you yourselves are full of goodness, amply filled with all [spiritual] knowledge, and competent to admonish and counsel and instruct one another. —Romans 15:14

  • I’ve never seen it that way before! Thank you.
  • I don’t know how to do that…yet. Can I ask you a few questions?
