We Are the Church – Week 2
Luke 5:1-11

Acts 17:5-7 (ESV)
But the Jews were jealous, and taking some wicked men of the rabble, they formed a mob, set the city in an uproar, and attacked the house of Jason, seeking to bring them out to the crowd.

6And when they could not find them, they dragged Jason and some of the brothers before the city authorities, shouting, “These men who have turned the world upside down have come here also,

7and Jason has received them, and they are all acting against the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus.”

Luke 5:4 (ESV)
4And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” 5And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.”

Pauses of faith have the potential to make eternal differences in our lives!

6And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking.

Luke 5:6 (ESV)
7They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. 8But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” 9For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken, 10and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” 11And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.

THE AWE OF GOD!

Luke 5:8 ESV - But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.”

To grow in your faith and be found in the power and presence of God, the AWE of God must be a quality that you not only possess but that you pursue.

7When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment, for he was stripped for work, and threw himself into the sea.
John 21:7 (ESV)

A COMMITMENT TO

!

And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.”

Luke 5:10 (ESV)

All Jesus wants from you is your willingness to follow him!
He doesn’t need your ability, he wants your availability.

11And when they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not be anxious about how you should defend yourself or what you should say,

Luke 12:11 (ESV)

12for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”

Luke 12:12 (ESV)

IT REQUIRES ALL OF YOU –

!

11And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.

Luke 5:11 (ESV)

But Jesus had just called them to go after something much better and more valuable. He had called them to be fishers of men.
