GPC GROUP DISCUSSION GUIDE
September 15, 2024
Speaker: Brett Ferguson
Title: “Finding Hope in Fixed Realities” – Part 2
Series: “1 Peter: Live as Exiles,” Sermon 2
Opening Prayer, Ice-Breaker, Worship: (Prayer, Ice-breaker, Worship, or all three)
Recap & Context of Sermon: This is a continuation of the truth that we have become exiles in this world because of our faith in Christ and we thrive as exiles if we regularly remind ourselves of the fixed realities that I Peter 1 speaks of: our fixed identity (last week), the reality of the resurrection, the reality of a certain future, and the reality tested faith.
Read the Text: 1 Peter 1:3-12 – Have everyone look up the Scripture and then ask someone to volunteer to read it out loud for the group.
Key verse: 1 Peter 1:3
Group Discussion
1. Review what our “fixed identity” is from last week. From verse 2: we are chosen, sanctified, and atoned for.
2. Read I Corinthians 15:14-19. Why is the resurrection of Christ such an important historical fact? How important is this truth to our faith? OPTIONAL: According to I Corinthians 15:58, how does the truth of the resurrection help us live life everyday?
3. The third reality Brett spoke of was the reality of our future. What is that reality like? (Hint: you might want to reference Revelation 21:1-4) Do you agree with Brett that most Christians’ view of eternity is anything but exciting and that that is a major problem for us? Why or why not?
4. What do you think we can do as a group to help us make our future reality a truly exciting and life-changing truth?
5. The fourth reality the text speaks to is the reality of tested faith. How can this reality be an encouragement to us?
6. Ask if anyone would be open to speaking about a time when their faith was tested, and:
a) Did they allow others to help them?
b) If they allowed others to help them, what was most helpful and what was not helpful?
c) How did this testing of your faith strengthen your faith?
Application:
1. Brett mentioned that our worship services tend to not be glorious remembrances of the resurrection except at Easter and he spoke of how our eternity is not very exciting to many of us. What do we need to do to change that?
2. Which of the four realities from I Peter 1:1-12 did God speak to you about and what does He want you to do about that reality in your life and how can we help make that happen?
Time of Honor: “Outdo one-another in showing honor” (Romans 12:10). Take a few minutes to honor one another in the group, encouraging in traits that you see modeled well as followers of Christ.
Prayer: How can our group help/support/pray for one another?
