Luke 2:1-5 “At that time the Roman emperor, Augustus, decreed that a census should be taken throughout the Roman Empire. (This was the first census taken when Quirinius was governor of Syria.) All returned to their own ancestral towns to register for this census. And because Joseph was a descendant of King David, he had to go to Bethlehem in Judea, David’s ancient home. He traveled there from the village of Nazareth in Galilee. He took with him Mary, his fiancée, who was now obviously pregnant.”
- His “Simple” Birth
Luke 2:6-7 “While they were there, the time came for her Baby to be born. 7She gave birth to her firstborn Son. She wrapped Him snugly in strips of cloth and laid Him in a manger, because there was no lodging available for them.”
Luke 2:15-16 “When the angels had returned to heaven, the shepherds said to each other, ‘Let’s go to Bethlehem! Let’s see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.’ They hurried to the village and found Mary and Joseph. And there was the Baby, lying in the manger.”
- His “Simple” Purpose
Matthew 1:23 “The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a Son and they will call Him Immanuel, which means ‘God is with us.’”
Astronaut James Irwin: “There’s something more important than man walking on the moon and that is God walking on the earth.”
John 3:16-17 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.”
- His “Simple” Name
Matthew 12:21 “His Name will be the hope of all the world.”
Acts 4:12 “Only Jesus has the power to save! His Name is the only one in all the world that can save anyone.”
The big idea: Christmas is the greatest story ever told!
