• Historical Overview (Gen. 12:1-5; 17:12-13; Lk. 3:16; Josh. 22:27; Ruth 1:16; Jn. 4:20, 25; Ex. 19:4-6, 8; Jn. 3:16; Rom. 1:16)

• Paul understood his purpose—To preach to the Gentiles (Eph. 3:1, see also 3:7-9).

• Paul’s purpose for this passage was to reveal a mystery.

• Though imprisoned, Paul continually pursued purpose by reassuring the Gentiles of their identity.

• Paul affirmed his identity (Eph. 3:1, 7).

• Paul viewed himself in light of Christ and what God called him to do.

• Because he looked at his life through the lens of his God-given identity and purpose, Paul persevered for the sake of the gospel and drew inspiration from his imprisonment.

• Paul provided deeper insight into the mystery of the church (Eph. 3:6).

• It’s a multifaceted mystery of reconciliation, unity, and equality.

Challenge: Reflect & Respond

So now through the church the multifaceted wisdom of God [in all its countless aspects] might now be made known [revealing the mystery] to the [angelic] rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. This is in accordance with [the terms of] the eternal purpose which He carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord. -Ephesians 3:10-11
