Come Out Of That Grave

Message Study Questions

Message Summary

Jesus told his disciples many times that He would die but then rise from the dead; and yet they were still surprised when He did. Jesus had even demonstrated His power over death by raising other people back to life, including Lazarus. He declared “I am the resurrection and the life,” (Jn. 11:29a). Jesus doesn’t give us a new life to stay where we are. He gives us new life to walk out of the grave we’ve been living in.

When Lazarus came out of the grave, they had to help him take off the grave clothes. You need a Christian community to help you walk it out. With Jesus, you don’t have to be on death row anymore. Why stay? In Christ, your sins have been forgiven. Your punishment paid for, and your debt taken care of. You have a new life in Christ. Get up and walk out of the tomb into your new life.

  1. Can you share a time when you saw and/or experienced the glory of God?

  2. How do you tend to react when it seems that God isn’t answering your prayers at the time you think He should?

Consider This

Some of you have never trusted in Jesus. You haven’t believed in Him yet. “If you believe, you will see the glory of God.” (Jn 11:40). For others, in Christ, you have joy, hope, a future. Are you walking in that or clinging to your old grave clothes in a stinky tomb?

  1. Read John 11:14. Why do you think Jesus said he was glad he wasn’t there to save Lazarus? How might this situation apply to our lives?

  2. Have you ever seen God use illness or death of a loved one to bring someone to faith in Jesus?

  3. Is there any shortcoming or disability in your life that God has used to draw others to Himself?

  4. Can you share a time when God’s response to your situation seemed untimely?

  5. Read John 11:21-27.

    • What does Jesus’ declaration mean to you?
    • How should we respond to disappointment?

  6. Read John 11:38-44.

    • How did Jesus raise Lazarus from the dead? How might this apply to you? (see 1 Thessalonians 4:16, 1 Corinthians 15:52, Revelation 1:10)?

    • What did Jesus do before he raised Lazarus (v 41-42)

    • If you had been there to see Jesus raise Lazarus from the dead, how do you think you would have responded?

  7. According to Ephesians 4:22, 25-32, what does putting off our old nature (grave clothes) look like?

  8. According to Colossians 3:12-15, what new clothes do you need to put on each day?

  9. For what miracle should you thank God for today?

Moving Forward – Application

Some people believed in Jesus after this event, others did not, but hardened their hearts to the point that they even plotted to kill Jesus (see (Jn 11:45-53).

  1. Do you have a limitation or weakness in your life that you could prayerfully ask God to use to glorify Himself this week?

  2. Prayerfully ask God to search your heart and reveal any attitude of disappointment in God and ask Him to change it to an attitude of trust.

  3. Is there someone who is hurting that you could comfort this week?

  4. Is there someone in your life with whom you could share a miracle experience this week?

*The life, death and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth are the most historically verified events in ancient history. Virtually all real historians agree that Jesus lived, and was executed by the Roman Governor Pontius Pilate. And that the twelve apostles believed Jesus rose from the dead. And it is a historical fact that the Apostles and their followers against all odds turned the world upside down with the Good News of the resurrection and forgiveness of sin over the next decades, centuries and millennia.
