Matthew 16:13-20

A. Introduction

  1. Debate over Jesus’ identity has been popular through the centuries. What are the opinions on Jesus in today’s secular world?

  2. Matthew 16:13-20 reveals Jesus’s true identity. How is this different from the current public opinions?

B. The Speculation (Matthew 16:13-15)
1. People in Jesus’ time struggled to identify him. Who did they say Jesus was?

  1. Public opinions may seem honorific, but they don’t always match Jesus’ identity. Jesus invites you to know him personally, beyond common views. Personally, who do you say Jesus is?


C. The Revelation (Matthew 16:16-17, 20)
1. Who does Peter say Jesus is?

  1. How did Peter find out Jesus’ true identity?

  2. People encounter Jesus through their senses, but who is the ultimate revealer of Jesus?

  3. Why did Jesus warn his disciples not to immediately reveal his identity to the crowd?


D. The Foundation (Matthew 16:18-19)
1. Matthew 16:18: “And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.”

Jesus continues to build his church, and the forces of opposition will not overcome it because the foundation of the church is on the true identity of Jesus as the Saviour of the world.
