Reflections on Sunday’s Sermon
Below is a reference to the section of the New City Catechism that we went over on Sunday:
The New City Catechism
Lord’s Day 4
How and Why Did God Create Us?
God created us male and female in his own image to know him, love him, live with him, and glorify him. And it is right that we who were created by God should live to his glory. (Genesis 1:27)
Scripture
Hebrews 11:23-28 - (English Standard Version)
- 23 By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw that the child was beautiful, and they were not afraid of the king’s edict. 24 By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, 25 choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. 26 He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the reward. 27 By faith he left Egypt, not being afraid of the anger of the king, for he endured as seeing him who is invisible. 28 By faith he kept the Passover and sprinkled the blood, so that the Destroyer of the firstborn might not touch them.
Understanding and Applying
- By Faith: Having laid hold of the promises by faith, how did this impact Moses’ choices when faced with temptations from the world and commands from God (vv. 24-28)?
- Application: How does Moses’ life—his temptations and choices—apply to the Hebrew Christians and us:
• Adoption: How does our adoption into the family of God change our relationships in this world (vv. 24-25; 2 Corinthians 6:14-18; 1 John 2:15-17)?
• Affliction: Having God as our great reward, how does this transform what we desire, endure, and long for (v. 26; Philippians 3:7-8; 1 Peter 4:13-14; 2 Peter 3:11-13)?
• Allegiance: Jesus being our true King, how do we assess those who have a measure of power over our lives (v. 27; Matthew 10:28; Romans 13:1; 1 Timothy 1:17)?
• Adherence: Through faith in Christ, what do we become devoted to in this life (v. 28; Acts 2:42; 1 Corinthians 11:26; Hebrews 10:23-25)?
- Continuity: How does this passage point us to the reality that the faith of the Old Testament saints is the same as ours (v. 26; Genesis 49:10; Deuteronomy 18:15; John 5:46; Hebrews 11:39-40)?
