Sermon: Old Testament Story
Scripture: Matthew 1:1
Summary: Jesus’ incarnation in the gospels is not the beginning of the story. The story started long before that. If we truly want to understand Christmas we need to go back before we go forward. In this sermon we will take a bird’s eye view of the Old Testament story in order to understand the saviour better.
For Reflection and Discussion
Read Scripture: Matthew 1:1
- What was your understanding of the story of the Old Testament before the message?
Have you ever studied the story before? - Which character do you most align with from the Old Testament?
Read this quote and discuss whether you agree or not.
“Deep down, however, something within us seems to remember the Garden within which we once existed. Part of us longs to return; we know that this is where we belong. But another part of us seems bent on living out our illusions of freedom and autonomy. We tell ourselves that we can create other gardens in which to find soul rest and encounter love. But what we create are weed-infested gardens of compulsions and idolatry. Instead of rest we get addiction and self-preoccupation. And our restlessness grows, our hearts yearning for something both familiar and unattainable.”
We can tend to put ourselves under condemnation. What do you typically put yourself under condemnation for?
- Slowly read Romans 8:1 and reflect on it silently for a minute. What comes to mind as you think about this truth?
- How can you keep Jesus the main thing this Christmas?
- What do you most love about Jesus’ incarnation?
