Scotty talked about four myths that we may believe about money:

Myth #1: The Ownership Myth. “I own my money.”
Myth #2: The Security Myth. “The more money I have, the more secure I will be.”
Myth #3: The Contentment Myth. “The more money I have, the more satisfied I will be.”
Myth #4: The Generosity Myth. “The more money I have, the more generous I will be.”
Which of these myths do you tend to buy into?

Look up as many of the following verses as you have time for. Which of the myths listed above might the verses apply to?

1 Timothy 6:17-19
James 1:17
Proverbs 22:9
Psalm 37:4
Ecclesiastes 5:10
Proverbs 21:26

  1. Consider a financial advisor, money manager, or banker. What kind of authority do they have over their client’s money? Discuss the limitations and freedoms they have with the money they manage. How does this compare to us and the money that God gives us to manage?
  2. What change is God asking you to make regarding your money? How can you practice irrational generosity? Brainstorm as a group about what irrational generosity could look like: personally, as a group, as a church. Think back to our Together For ideals: neighbors, next generation, and those in need.

Pray

Pray together as a group about what God is calling the group to, to be irrationally generous.
