The Lies We Love: A Community of Overcomers

Director of Student Ministry Justin Ruszkiewicz
Sunday, June 15, 2025, Father’s Day

The Lie: I want “deeper relationships,” but really I want convenience, not vulnerability.

If your life is lived in the shallows, you’ll drown in the storms.

Big Idea: Through Christ, we are called to be a community of overcomers.

Big Question: What are the challenges that can only be overcome through community?
Main Scripture: Proverbs 27:5-10, 17 (NLT)

What are the challenges that can only be overcome through community?
Challenge #1 – Overcoming the Fear of Friction

An open rebuke is better than hidden love! 6 Wounds from a sincere friend are better than many kisses from an enemy. —Proverbs 27:5-6

A fake friend flatters to destroy you, but a true friend wounds to heal you.

What are the challenges that can only be overcome through community?
Challenge #1 – Overcoming the Fear of Friction
Challenge #2 – Overcoming the Urge to Abandon

The heartfelt counsel of a friend is as sweet as perfume and incense. —Proverbs 27:9

Never abandon a friend — either yours or your father’s. When disaster strikes, you won’t have to ask your brother for assistance. It’s better to go to a neighbor than to a brother who lives far away. —Proverbs 27:10

All the persons of faith I know are sinners, doubters, uneven performers. We are secure not because we are sure of ourselves but because we trust that God is sure of us. —Eugene H. Peterson

Challenge #3 – Overcoming the Pitfalls of Pride

As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend. —Proverbs 27:17

No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us. 38 And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. —Romans 8:37-38
